    Hello, this is the My Informed Life team starting this Inforum rolling with a topic about foods that lower blood sugar.

    Our question to you is, for those of you who are diabetic or for those of you who monitor your blood sugar, are there any foods that seem to lower your blood sugar? If there are foods that have these strange effects, to what degree did they lower your blood sugar or reduce a blood sugar spike?

    Had you ever read anything that warned you these foods might have this effect? Or did you merely find out by surprise?

    I am an Insulin Dependent Diabetic diagnosed over 20 years ago. Whilst the following foods lower MY blood sugar, there is no proven reason that they would have the same effect for anyone else.

    Mushrooms, both raw and cooked, and fresh pineapple cause a slight drop in my blood sugar.

    Karela, also known as Indian Bitter Melon, causes a very dramatic drop in my blood sugar levels and if I am having a Karela dish I take less insulin. However, raw it is the most vile tasting vegetable imaginable.

    I was introduced to Karela by an Indian Chef who assured me that in India it is used to reduce blood sugars, a fact that a Google search will confirm. I have found several recipes that are easy to cook and very tasty. Just don’t try it raw!
